PNB Mall Walkers Club

Back in the ‘90s my favorite person was my 70-something small town fashion icon grandmother, Helen. She was sporty, she was nurturing, she was timelessly classy and she was my obsession. Her love of staying active (yoga, tennis, you name it) and penchant for decadent cooking made it clear to me that taking care of yourself can look different from day to day. She was a master of self care before it became an internet buzzword. 

One of the ways my grandmother stayed active was with an early morning spin around the mall. And on hazy summer mornings when school was out, I got to tag along. 

Morning mall was different. Blinking storefront lights and bustling kiosks were replaced by familiar faces with kind smiles, brief updates, and promises of “see you soon”. And bonus, no one ever tried to pierce your ears! Morning mall had its own culture. What a treat to experience this place through a completely different lens with my favorite person. 

Following the mall, we would often pop by Joann Fabric and then maybe stop for pizza at Little Caesars. My grandmother died in early 1998 and I still dream about her. I still feel her.

Grief is a before and after. Our lives are built of collections of memories and experiences that if we are lucky, we get to live out time and again. In a way, experiencing grief means we had    

This idea is just for fun. Just for me, just for you. An ode to nostalgic recollections of people, places, and things. More importantly, it is an invitation to unplug and connect - a sort of tribute to ourselves and to those who wanted the best for us. My hope is to gather for a refreshing walk together once a week. Let’s tend to ourselves and each other. 

The PNB Mall Walkers is the most inclusive, non-exclusive club in Earlysville. We will walk from 8:30AM - 9:30AM every Tuesday morning. There will be friends. There will be neon (even if it’s just our logo). Once in a while there will be a pizza party at the office.
